Soaring ambitions: Building India’s air cargo capacity

As the country targets handling ten million tonnes of air cargo annually by 2030, India is looking to modernise and transform operations to not only boosting economic growth but also creating a robust, resilient logistics network crucial for a thriving economy.

Sanjiv Edwards, Chief Commercial Officer at Delhi International Airport, emphasised the need for robust infrastructure, innovative technology, and strategic partnerships to harness this potential and drive the sector forward: “India’s air cargo industry is at a pivotal point. We have the opportunity to transform our logistics landscape and position ourselves as a global leader.”

Manoj Singh, Chief Cargo Officer at Adani Airport Holdings, focused on the importance of development to support the burgeoning air cargo demands, discussing his group’s plans for expanding cargo handling capacities across its airports: “Our goal is to create a seamless and efficient cargo ecosystem that can handle the increasing volume and complexity of air cargo operations,” Singh said.

Captain Nikhil Ved, Managing Director of Blue Dart Aviation, shared insights on how logistics can be optimised through advanced technologies and streamlined processes: “Efficiency in operations not only reduces costs but also ensures timely deliveries, which is essential for maintaining customer trust and satisfaction.”

Global perspectives

Vishal Bhatnagar Managing Director of Global Cargo Operations at Delta Air Lines provided an international perspective on air cargo operations, emphasising the importance of working towards a shared vision: “Collaboration with global partners allows us to offer comprehensive solutions and meet the diverse needs of our customers.”

Camilo Gracia Cervera, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer at IAG Cargo, echoed that sentiment, discussing how global standards can be integrated into the Indian air cargo industry: “Innovation is at the core of our operations. By adopting global best practices, we can elevate the standards of the Indian air cargo sector.”

Vaibhav Vohra, Managing Director of Continental Carriers Pvt Ltd., delved into the role innovation will play in this international development: “Technology is a game-changer in the logistics industry. It not only improves efficiency but also provides real-time visibility and enhances security.”
