KLM Cargo has flown 50 paintings and 25 drawings from The Hague’s museum for modern art to Brazil, where they will be exhibited for the year.

The 50 paintings were from the Mondrian collection by Piet Mondrian, and the other work was done by De Stijl artists, Bart van der Leck and Theo van Doesburg. Dutch company, Hizkia van Kralingen, transported the collection from Gemeentemuseum Den Haag to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The artwork was packed in boxes known as ‘turtles’ and was stored at 18 degrees centigrade. When the cargo it was unloaded then taken to the exhibition space as quickly as possible so the tropical heat did not damage the artwork.

The exhibition, entitled ‘Mondrian and De Stijl’, starts in Sao Paulo on 25 January, before moving to Brasilia, Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro at three month intervals, then returning to The Hague in January 2017.
