Heathrow cargo soars in the wake of Brexit vote

Heathrow Airport’s cargo volumes soared by just under six per cent in September on the back of growth to East Asia and Latin America.

The hub says freight traffic to was Brazil was up 18per cent, to China by 13 per cent and to Mexico by seven per cent.

Heathrow handled 126,109 tonnes in September a 5.9 per cent rise on the same month last year. In the first nine months of the year the airport handled 1,128,067 tonnes, a 2.1 per cent increase on the same period last year.

On a year-to-date basis the hub has handled 1,520,006 tonnes, up 1.2 per cent on the previous 12 months.

Heathrow is Britain’s largest port, accounting for almost 30 per cent of all UK exports by value outside the European Union last year while Gatwick served only 0.2 per cent.

Heathrow chief executive officer, John Holland-Kaye says: “The Prime Minister is clear that her Government will step up and do what’s right for Britain. Expanding our country’s largest port will give Britain’s businesses the best connected trading network in the world. We’ll show that we’re confident about our future and determined to make a success of Brexit.

“We’ve had the debate on airport capacity, we’ve heard all the arguments and the independent evidence is conclusive – Heathrow expansion will make Britain stronger and fairer for everyone. Now is the time to make the right choice for Britain and back Heathrow.”
