Two explosions at Brussels Airport this morning and as many as 13 are feared dead and more than 30 are severely injured, media outlets are reporting.

Reuters says the airport explosions were set off by a suicide bomber, the Belgian broadcaster VRT reports. It adds shots were fired and there were shouts in Arabic shortly before the airport blasts, according to the Belga news agency.

A second attack also hit a Metro station near the European Union headquarters and is thought to have killed another 10 and injured others.

Brussels Airport released a statement and explains: “All flights cancelled at Brussels Airport for the rest of the day.

“At 8am two explosions have occured in the departure hall. Emergency services are on the premices and are offering the necessary assistance.

“All flights at Brussels Airport today are cancelled. Passengers are requested to contact their airline for further instructions. The airport authorities are asking to avoid the surroundings of the airport.

“Passengers present in other zones at the airport are asked to remain calm and to wait until further information is available.”

Reports claim the explosions were close the American Airlines check-in desks at the airport’s terminal.

American Airlines’ Twitter account tweeted: “At this time, there are no reported injuries to our employees.”
