As the specialised agency coordinating international air navigation principles and techniques, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Council plays a pivotal role in fostering the planning and development of global air transport.

Outlining the challenges and opportunities facing the aviation industry’s transition to more sustainable practices, Sciacchitano emphasised “Our mission is to lead international civil aviation into a future that is safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible,” he explained.

Addressing these areas, ICAO has prioritised its commitment towards the following:

1.Safety and Security:
Sciacchitano underscored the importance of maintaining rigorous safety and security standards, noting that while aviation remains one of the safest modes of transport, continuous improvement is essential to address emerging risks and ensure passenger confidence.

2.Sustainability and Innovation:
Sustainability was a central theme of the ICAO chief’s speech, reiterating the group’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and the crucial role of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) in this endeavour.

“The transition to SAF and other green technologies is not just an environmental imperative but also a significant economic opportunity for the industry,” he said.

3.Global Cooperation:
Sciacchitano called for enhanced international cooperation to tackle the complex challenges facing aviation, praising the collaborative efforts that have led to significant achievements, such as the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), urging continued partnership among governments, industry players, and regulatory bodies.
