A new air cargo service from Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) in the US to Munich Airport is set to start, according to the Spartanburg Herald Journal.

The publication reports that German car manufacturer BMW is planning on using the new service from the South Carolina gateway to the Bavarian hub in Germany, which will be operated from 5 November by freight firm Senator International of Germany.

Senator will reportedly run two flights each week on Saturdays and Wednesdays between Munich and GSP.

BMW’s manufacturing plant is in Spartanburg County, and it is planing to use the new air cargo service for both imports and exports of its models.

The region served by Senator International’s cargo services at GSP includes South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia, according to the newspaper, quoting an airport spokesman.

European countries set to benefit from the route from GSP are Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland.

In March, the Spartanburg Herald Journal says GSP handled 2,832 tonnes of cargo, an 18.4 percent increase over March 2015.
