Frankfurt Airport’s cargo volumes rose 5.6 per cent in January to 168,556 tonnes – which the hub puts down to the growing global demand for goods and the timing of the Chinese New Year.
Other gateways within the airport operator Fraport’s ownership saw varying results.
Ljubljana Airport in Slovenia handled 861 tonnes, up 14.6 per cent on the same month in 2016 and Lima Airport in Peru handled 25,217 tonnes, up 3.2 per cent on January last year.
Fraport’s Twin Star Airports Burgas and Varna on the Bulgarian Black Sea both saw increases by 16.3 per cent and 100 per cent, respectively, to 1,644 tonnes and 97 tonnes.
In northern Germany, Hanover Airport handled 1,619 tonnes, a rise of 2.4 per cent, and in China, Xi’an Airport saw a fall of 3.3 per cent to 22,278 tonnes.
